When life changes
Know when to make changes to your benefits
Whether you’re having a baby or getting married, Qualifying Life Events (QLEs) must be reported to the Benefits department so you can make necessary changes to your benefit elections.
Changes due to a QLE must be submitted within 31 days of the qualifying event date and are effective the first day of the month following the event. The only exception is for newborns or newly adopted children, whose coverage is effective on their date of birth or adoption.
Common QLEs include:
- Change in marital status, such as marriage, divorce, or death of a spouse
- Change in the number of dependents, including birth, adoption, or legal guardianship
- Change in your spouse’s employment status resulting in a gain or loss of coverage
- Change in your employment status resulting in a gain or loss of coverage
- Enrollment in Medicare or Medicaid
Note: Before changes are approved, documentation is required. Review the Dependent Eligibility Matrix for proof requirements.

Dental care at home
Receive a free oral health screening
If you’re enrolled in a dental plan but avoid dental visits due to cost, inconvenience, or dental anxiety, SmartScan provides a fast, free, and painless way to stay on top of your oral health.
SmartScan is an at-home dental screening tool that allows you to use your smartphone to take guided photos of your teeth.
Within minutes, you’ll receive a professional assessment from a Cigna Healthcare dentist. This screening does not replace a full dental exam and X-rays, which remain important for protecting your oral health.
*SmartScan screenings are available at no additional cost for those enrolled in a Cigna dental plan.
How it works
- Take guided photos of your teeth and mouth using your smartphone
- Upload your photos to dental.com for review by artificial intelligence and a Cigna Healthcare network dentist
- Receive a report with an overall oral health rating
A green rating indicates healthy oral status. Yellow or red ratings allow you to book a teledentistry appointment or receive a referral to a Cigna Healthcare Dental in-network provider.
